Your role in New Jersey's GDL

Parents sign consent for the special learner permit and, for permits issued on or after February 1, 2025, certify at least 50 hours of supervised practice (10 at night) on form BA-CSD. The MVC notes a fraudulent certification can lead to a six-month suspension, so log hours honestly from the start.

How we partner with parents

After lessons, we tell you what your teen did well and what to practice next. If you notice a habit you're worried about during practice, tell us and we'll work on it in the next lesson.

FAQ

Questions we hear

Do professional lessons count toward the 50 hours?

The 50 hours are supervised practice certified by a parent, guardian or supervising driver on BA-CSD. Ask the NJ MVC how professional instruction applies to your situation; either way, lessons make practice more effective.

Who can supervise practice driving?

The NJ MVC requires the supervising driver to be at least 21 and hold a valid NJ license for the type of vehicle.

What restrictions apply to probationary drivers?

They include limits on late-night driving and passengers, no hand-held or hands-free devices, and GDL decals. See the NJ MVC for the current list.
