Every new driver in New Jersey, and most out-of-country license holders, must pass the NJ MVC knowledge test and a vision screening before getting behind the wheel on a permit. Here is a clear, practical guide to preparing.
Who needs to take the knowledge test?
- Teens 16 and older enrolled in a behind-the-wheel course with a licensed driving school (or an approved school program) for a special learner permit.
- Drivers 17 and older applying for an examination permit.
- Out-of-country license holders. The NJ Driver Manual states that all out-of-country applicants must pass the knowledge test and vision screening and may be required to pass a road test (limited reciprocity exceptions apply).
What's on the test?
The test is based on the official New Jersey Driver Manual. Expect multiple-choice questions on traffic signs and signals, right-of-way rules, safe following distances, speed limits, alcohol and drug laws, GDL restrictions, sharing the road with pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles and trucks, and what to do in emergencies.
A simple two-week study plan
- Days 1–3: Read the Driver Manual chapters on licensing, GDL and traffic laws. Take notes on numbers (distances, ages, fines, points).
- Days 4–6: Study signs, signals and pavement markings until you can identify them instantly by shape and color.
- Days 7–9: Focus on right-of-way, intersections, jughandles, roundabouts and railroad crossings, all common in Bergen County.
- Days 10–12: Cover alcohol, drugs, distracted driving and penalties.
- Days 13–14: Take timed practice quizzes and review every question you miss.
Test-day tips
- Bring the documents the MVC requires (see our what to bring to the MVC guide).
- Wear your glasses or contacts if you need them for the vision screening.
- Read every answer before choosing. Watch for words like "always," "never" and "except."
- Arrive early; Bergen County MVC locations can be busy.
After you pass
Teens taking our 6-hour behind-the-wheel course will complete that training, and the permit is then validated for practice driving. Adults on an examination permit can begin supervised practice. Either way, professional lessons help you turn book knowledge into real driving skill.
